30 Year Anniversary for Tokyo Airport
May
20th
30 years ago, on 20th May 1978, Tokyo’s Narita Airport opened its runway. Since then, it has handled over 680 million passengers and 41 million tonnes of cargo.
Strangely, in all that time, Tokyo Airport has still not used yet the full 4000 metres of runway. A second runway has since been added and by 2010 the airport will be able to handle 220,000 flights per year.
Tokyo is a great city and makes a fabulous city break, whether its en route to further afield or a specific visit. The airport competes with four other major airports in Japan for their incoming tourism so there are plenty of flights available and there are several major airlines who operate direct flights to Tokyo, including KLM, British Airways and Lufthansa, amongst others.
