Aldi launching new travel website

The household discount supermarket chain, Aldi is going to be launching its only travel website in January 2009 which the supermarket brand claims will ‘turn the online travel industry on its head’.
Aldi has 400 stores across the UK and a further 7,000 stores world-wide, its new travel site will be known as: www.alditravel.co.uk and hold the motto ‘A break you’ll remember at a price you’ll love’. The supermarket chain does already sell some of its own travel products within Germany, Austria and Switzerland in partnership with the company Eurotours International.
Aldi group buying director Sarah Butler said:
“We have sold a million holidays in Austria since we launched in 2003… We are not new to travel and we are hoping to replicate the same success in the UK.”
Chief executive Steve Endacott said:
“This is not your typical online product. We’re playing hard to get. Hoteliers will have to offer us something really special in order to be selected. In return, they will get a full hotel.”
Sarah Butler added “the timing of the launch is perfect, given the current economic climate and the subsequent ‘Aldi effect.”
Aldi is prospering in the current climate as it has already seen a 26% increase of sales in comparison to last year’s figures. Aldi are opening new stores across the country at a rate of one per week and their long term aim is to have another 50 stores by the end of 2009.
