Athens dates back to around 5000 years BC and by 700 BC was already a major force and capital of Attica, the name for that region at the time.

When the city was eventually overshadowed by Rome, the city fell into decline and was then occupied by the Turks until 1833 when the Greens forced them out and took back their city, making it the capital of Greece.  Now, Athens is a modern capital city and ideal for a city break.

The world famous Acropolis is the place to start and is home to another famous building, the Parthenon and the Erchtheion where legend has it the gods Athena and Poseidon fought.

You can visit the National Archaeological Museum to see even more ancient treasures.

In the evenings, be sure to visit the local tavernas with their fairy lights and enchanting music.  Watch out for pickpockets, but it sure is a fine place to dine.
