The chief exec of British Airways, Willie Walsh, has been given a £35,000 payrise. He’s also been promised a £1 million bonus if he can improve the reputation and performance over the next year.

Not a bad promise when he just announced last month that he wouldn’t be taking his £700,000 bonus for the last year because of poor performance!

Many people applauded that move last month, but what I want to know is why the heck did he have to ‘decline’ his £700k bonus? Surely the decision should be down to the company, not him and if it was a bonus based on targets then he either met them or he didn’t.

I tell you what, despite customers getting poor service and disgruntled passengers, BA never fails to turn a massive profit - they’re heading for record-breaking profits this year, again - and this sort of bonus that is worth 1.5 times his salary is ridiculous (his salary is normally £700,000 anyway, now to be £735,000 after the payrise). Obviously, I’m jealous, but what sort of industry is it when the company can have an appalling performance and still offer huge bonuses like this.
