Croatia Annoys The Czechs
This article may be slightly off the topic of city breaks, but whilst looking into taking a short break to Croatia I came across an interesting news story.
Apparently, the Czechs have a tradition of taking low budget self catering holidays on the Croatian coast, so they pack up their car with food and goodies and go to the Croatian seaside for the day.
However, the grocery stores and restaurant owners in Croatia have long complained that they make no money from the Czech tourists as they bring everything with them.
In response the Croatian government has now banned the import of all meat and dairy products from any EU countries, which effectively puts an end to this Czech tradition as they’ll now have to buy their food when they get there.
The Czechs are not a nation to take this lightly. 10% of bookings have now been cancelled as angry Czechs refuse to go back.
The newspaper Pravo has argued that the Czech tourists still contribute to the Croatian economy by booking self catering flats and hostels rather than the big hotels. Apparently, the Czechs are now heading to Italy instead.
Oh, the joys of politics - love it!
