Early this December Venice experienced the worst flooding in twenty years which submerged most of the city and left it’s’ tourists stranded or at the least, knee deep in water. St Mark’s fire engine sirens echoed across the square as surging water and freezing water that had gushed in from the Adriatic.
For those tourists who were on their city break holidays in Venice experienced no gas or electricity within their hotels and a national transport strike was called and all buses and taxes stopped running mainly because of the water logged streets.

For a first time in a long time the mayor of Venice actually discouraged people from coming to his city.
During early December 2008 the water levels in Venice had risen well over 5 foot higher than sea level which made it even higher water levels than the previous record which was 1986 during aqua alta.

Tide monitoring officials had said that levels may well reach a 30 year high should they continue. The previous ‘6ft 4 inch above sea level ‘water levels that were reached in 1966 could look like a walk in the park. This December the harsh weather conditions haven’t just been affecting Venice they have also affected Rome in Italy as the city has been suffering quite badly from very heavy snow, rain, hail and strong winds.
