Gap Years Are For Everyone
Imagine how many city breaks I could get in if I went on a gap year holiday! Of course, I’m no longer in my early twenties, and I didn’t have the chance when I was that age, but it seems many older generations are thinking along the same lines. They didn’t have the chance when they were younger and now they see all these young kids skipping carefree into the distance on a chance of a lifetime trip, you can’t blame them for a twinge of jealousy.
Of course, taking a gap year when you’re in your forties or fifties is very different and you have commitments and responsibilities to consider, but things may not be as bleak or as difficult as you might think.
For example, with the new flexible or offset mortgages, you no longer have to save up your whole year’s mortgage payments before you go! Just be prepared to spread the missed payments over the remaining term when you get back
You don’t have to abandon your pension for a whole year either. Even without an income, you can now still put £3600 in per year
Renting is a great option now and you should be able to rent your house out whilst you’re gone. Just don’t forget to tell your mortgage provider and insurance company
Be sure to get a good travel insurance and get a great deal on your debit and credit cards for spending abroad. Try to find a good zero interest card to use and one that doesn’t charge you to take money out at cash machines abroad.
So, all things considered, get gone and explore the world!
