Government is urged to freeze tax on flights
The regional airline, Flybe has just recently appealed to the government again last week to suspend their plans for increasing air passenger duty on the tax of all flights later in 2009.
The recent appeal came after the Dutch government completely abolished flight tax altogether following its airports starting to lose passengers to other hubs which were less in expensive in Europe.
CEO, Mike Rutter at Flybe said whilst a similar move to abolish tax in the UK is highly unlikely, but perhaps the government should be considering to abandon their plans to increase the duty.
‘Flybe is not innocent enough to think that the UK government will follow the Dutch lead and abolish APD but we certainly think there is a case for them to put on ice the planned November rise in APD,’ he said. ‘Such a move would be a tangible stimulus to the British economy and send out a very clear message that the government cares about industries other than just the banking sector.’
The Dutch abolition of their APD was very welcomed by easyJet, although the budget airline did stress that the Amsterdam Schiphol is still much more expensive than airports in Frankfurt, Paris and Zurich.
