Holiday makers informed of scams abroad
Holiday makers need to be extra vigilant when they are travelling abroad in order to avoid being a target to con artists say a leading insurance company.
LV = set a survey called YouGov which uncovered that 21% of British travellers have at some time been conned out of their money within the last 5 years.
Some of the more simple scams include taxi drivers taking ‘scenic routes,’ timeshare cons and shopkeepers inflating their prices when serving tourists.
Recent statistics showed that the average amount of money lost by tourists as a direct result of fraudulent activities is around £250; however, despite this figure only 10% of the incidents that happened were reported to the police.
Spokesperson for LV=, Emma Holyer, said:
‘The cold days of winter will spur many of us to start planning our holidays, but with one in ten holidaymakers falling victim to scams abroad in the past two years its clear there is an industry worth billions based on ripping them off.’
Spokesman Jess Prasad from the FCO added: ‘Being prepared before you go abroad will lessen the risk of you being scammed. Read up on your destination as much as possible before you travel.’
