London Shows World’s Longest Insect
Totally not my cup of tea, but for those interested in unusual wildlife, they might be interested to know that the world’s longest insect is reportedly on show in London, so a good excuse for a London city break I think.
The world’s longest insect is a stick insect from Borneo, which is more than half a metre long - 56.7 cm to be precise!
The donation was given to the Natural History Museum by Datuk Chan Chew Lun, and is now on display in the museum’s galleries.
This is a new species of the stick insect, new to science that is, and only 3 instances has been found of it, all of which were in Borneo.
The previous record holder was one centimetre shorter.
Dr George Beccaloni, a stick insect expert at the Natural History Museum, said: ‘We’ve known about both of the previous record holders for over a hundred years, so it is extraordinary that an even bigger species has only just been discovered.’
