Manchester Airport has two rail stations at the moment and the third has now been approved.

Operational tests to check the signalling, the overhead lines and the track have been successfully completed as a train was sent down the track in a pre-launch test.

This will be great news for passengers of Manchester Airport as it will increase capacity, as currently eight trains per hour run into the city centre from the airport.

The project cost an estimated £15 million.

Ground Transport Manager for Manchester Airport, Bob Longworth, said:

‘The third rail platform is essential to continue to develop our integrated ground transport scheme at Manchester airport. We are keen to see more passengers get to and from the airport using public transport. The opening of the third platform in December will give us additional capacity to meet the increasing demand from our passengers to use rail services for their airport journey.’
