Manchester airport unveils the new home to Concorde

An official unveiling at Manchester airport saw the new eco friendly building celebrate being the new home of a Concorde aircraft.

The Concorde visitor centre is a 2,574 square metre attraction which started in December 2008 that provides the ex British Airways flagship craft the Concorde G-BOAC with a home.

Tim Orchard was one of the guests who attended the ceremony which opened the new facility this week, he jointly holds the record for flying in the fastest time in Concorde between London and New York – the travel time recorded was a new world record of two hours 52 minutes.

Geoff Muirhead CBE and CEO for the Manchester Airport Group also attended the opening ceremony along with the British Airways CEO Willie Walsh.

Mr Walsh said:

‘Manchester airport was one of 60 high-profile locations worldwide that originally bid to give a home to a retiring Concorde. It gives me great pleasure to see the culmination of that bid today in this magnificent new exhibition area and visitor centre.’

Another announcement from Manchester airport this month is that they are the first UK airport which are to be awarded with the Carbon Trust Standard, giving recognition to its commitment in reducing carbon emissions world-wide.
