Technology company Steape and Lonely Planet publishers are working together to create an audio phrasebook for modern travellers to use on their mobile phones.

The phrasebooks will give more than 200 phrases in 10 different languages available in audio through Java-enabled mobile phone’s speakers and in text format.

According to a representative from Steape:

“For travellers, having a means of communication gives them some security and backpackers will probably be going to countries where people don’t speak English, and they can’t speak the language or read the signs.  In an emergency or even if you just need to get to the airport and have no idea how to get there it could be a lifesaver.”

The audio phrasebook will be available at a cost of just €4 (£3.20) in downloadable format.  These will be useful for most modern day travellers as most people have Java-enabled mobiles, and I know they’ll be useful for me on my city breaks!
