New York Wants More Tourists
Tourist numbers to New York have far outweighed all previous expectations. In 2007, over 46 million people visited the city.
Their original tourism target was to have 50 million visitors by 2015, however, the mayor of the city, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, has brought this forward now and set the target to 50 million visitors by 2012, three years earlier than planned.
These 46 million visitors last year generated more than $28 billion (£14.4 billion) of revenue and supported over 470 thousand jobs.
Mayor Bloomberg said:
“New York City’s tourism sector is booming, with record numbers of visitors coming each of the last five years, even as the number of international visitors to the rest of the nation has declined. That’s why we’re confident we can reach our goal of attracting 50m visitors to the city by 2012, three years ahead of schedule.”
The statistics so far this year certainly seem to support this new target. Hotels in New York sold around 5.4 million room nights, which is a 5 per cent increase on the same period from 2007.
