Northern Territory (NT) government in Australia has decided to launch a new promotional to attract more backpackers to the region.

Chris Burns, tourism minister has just revealed there were 92,000 backpackers within 2008 who visited the Northern Territory which is an increase of 7% and there are plans in place to cater for this large and growing market this year.

A key aspect of the government’s campaign is to set up a partnership with a company called gapyear.com that have an online backpacker forum which they intend to use as a platform for the promotion of the two new travel guides for the region.

Dr Burns said:

‘We’ve worked hard to increase the number of backpackers coming to the Territory and we want to see even more backpackers travelling across the NT. That’s why we’ve joined with gapyear.com to promote the Territory and help independent travellers plan their trip down under.’

Dr Burns went on to say that the organisation have just recently found that backpackers spent over Aus $54 million (£25.7 million) last year alone in the Northern Territory.

Gateway that most use to this region is Darwin and it is served by a number of airlines including Qantas and Virgin Blue.
