Salzburg - the ‘Salt Castle’

When a town gains its popularity because of its salting mines and is even given a name that means ’salt castle’ you wouldn’t expect it to become a big tourism area - but that’s exactly what Salzburg has achieved.

Aside from being a beautiful mountain area, Salzburg has two main attractions - both are music-related.

Firstly, it’s a Mozart location and Salzburg won’t let you forget it.  They even have ‘Mozartwoche’ a week-long festival dedicated to Mozart, held in January each year.  There are also other classical music festivals, inspired by Mozart, such as the Osterfestspiele in late March to early April and the Pfingstfestspiele, a music festival specialising in baroque music, usually in late May,  Then there’s the Salzburger Festspiele.  This is the big one, held late July - late August, consisting of five weeks of operas and concerts, and naturally Mozart is not far away.

Secondly, they filmed The Sound of Music in Salzburg in 1964 so if you’re into your film-location spotting, Salzburg will give you plenty.  The real life Von Trapp family lived in the area and once the film was released, Salzburg was never the same again.  You can go on a Sound of Music tour if you wish.
