Sydney Harbour, Australia

The Opera House in Sydney Harbour is one of those sights that many people would love to see if they could stand the flight (which actually isn’t that bad, having done it myself!)

That iconic image of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, which connects both the North and South shore, is unforgettable and even if you’ve never been to Sydney and know very little about Australia itself you will know that image.

If and when you get the opportunity to go, you must view the Sydney Harbour from the water.  There are river cruises, ferries and water taxis travelling up and down the Harbour all the time peddling their wares and souvenirs.

You can also walk across the bridge itself and see The Rocks beneath it.  The Rocks is a rocky spur and is known as the heart of the city.  It’s where the New South Wales colony was started back in 1788 by Captain Arthur Phillip.

The city didn’t become a tourist attraction until the 1970’s and even then it was a gradual process.  The area was actually due for demolition but was rescued.  The Opera House itself took 16 years to build and cost ten times more than initially estimated but its landmark icon has more than paid off as one of the most photographed icons in the world.
