Temple Bar, Dublin
Whilst on a city break to Dublin earlier this year, our group felt we had to go down to Temple Bar. For those who don’t know, Temple Bar isn’t just one bar, but an area on the south of the River Liffey. It hasn’t changed at all since the last time I visited. It’s incredibly busy, packed with tourists and feels just like every Irish bar in Britain.
As the chap on the river cruise said, the Temple Bar area was refurbished to become an area of culture in Dublin. It certainly looks nice and it’s full of some fabulous restaurants, but cultural it isn’t.
I almost feel sorry for the tourists who head down there. Alright, they get to see some great bands and hear some great live music, but they must wonder what’s so fab about it all. It’s just like a night out in Liverpool but the accent is different.
For the record, try some of the proper local bars just off O’Connell Street. They’re much more authentic and you can see the real Irish bars. Young and old drink and sing together, enjoying some fabulous live music and great food and drink. If you’re lucky, you might catch a few Irish dancers. There’s no queuing at the bar - amazingly, you can even get to the bar. I love Dublin.
