The End Of Cheap City Breaks?
This weekend, I read a horrifying article. It quoted British Airways boss, Willie Walsh, saying that the days of cheap air travel could soon be over as the air industry struggles to cope with ever increasing fuel prices.
Rising oil prices, combined with ‘green’ taxes from the government, will combine to mean higher air prices and surcharges.
According to Walsh, this would mean the end of cheap airlines like Ryanair or Easyjet, so no more cheap flights for cheap city breaks.
Already some airlines are charging for extras like luggage, early check in, seat reservations and lunch in-flight.
Walsh believes the rising prices will spell the end for some airlines, reducing competition and capacity for passengers, further increasing prices and reducing some available flights.
His thoughts could be proved correct - business only airlines Maxjet and EOS have already gone bust and the London to Hong Kong carrier Oasis has also closed.
Walsh also confirmed that British Airways will be not only increasing its prices but will also be closing less profitable routes.
Oh dear, guess I’d better get my city breaks in as soon as possible as I’m not sure I’ll be able to afford them in a year or two!
