The Valley of the Kings

A more unusual city break, Luxor is one the major cities of Egypt and just four miles from Luxor, upriver and across the bridge to the West Bank of the Nile is the Valley of the Kings.

You may have heard the name from films and such like, most people have.  It is where the kings of Egypt were buried, including the famous King Tut and the latest discovery, Tutankamen.  Tutankemans was a noteworthy fine because his tomb had not yet been looted.  Most tombs were looted years before.  Tutamkamen’s tomb was discovered by a British archaeologist, Howard Carter, back in 1922.

To visit the tombs, you can get there from Luxor by ferry across the Nile or a private motorboat, or you can take a short taxi over the bridge.  Remember to buy your tickets beforehand though because you cannot actually buy them from the Valley.  You need to buy them from the Ticket Office on the West Bank and have to buy a ticket for each temple or tomb.

The tombs are a wonderful sight, full of floor-to-ceiling designs showing the afterlife.  They open at 6am and get very busy so its advisable to go early.

The best time to visit is in Winter because the desert gets very hot in summer.  Try to visit from October to March.  I have yet to visit Egypt, but it is on my list, and Luxor and the Valley of the Kings would be top of the agenda.
