Top 10 City Break Destinations

Here is a list of my personal, favourite city break destinations, most of which I have visited myself or come highly recommended by those who have visited them. In no particular order…

Barcelona - a myriad of dance, music and drinking. Plenty to see and do for young or old

Lisbon - a bustling harbour, be sure to go fishing and sunbathing on one of the local boat trips

Paris - for the romantic or those who want a cheaper city break, easier to get to, you cannot miss the Eiffel Tower

Dublin - a true Guinness-lover could not visit Dublin without a trip to the brewery. Shopping and pubs sums up this city for me

London - why miss this one out just because it’s our local! It’s surprising the number of people I speak to in the North who have never visited our nation’s capital. Just because you see Big Ben on the television most weeks doesn’t forgive you for not seeing it for yourself. I could talk endlessly about the sightseeing in London, but I’m sure you can think of ten for yourself

Prague - one of the latecomers to attracting the tourists but growing in popularity all the time, this city is not only cheap (although that is quickly changing, so go now), it is full of history and has a surprisingly cosmopolitan nightlife

New York - the ‘Big Apple’, the one most people say they’d like to see, you will be surprised how much of it you recognise. The Empire State Building, Central Park, the skyline, Broadway shows, need I go on?

Sydney - the distinctive harbour and the Opera House make this one of the most recognisable cities in the world. It’s a long flight, but well worth it

Rome - this had to make the list for its history, see the fountains, cathedrals, squares and eat Italian ice cream and pasta. This is one of the more expensive cities, but another must-visit for the list

Venice - another one for the romantics, this city has a maze of waterways and is an island itself. You must take a trip in a gondola and eat in a waterside restaurant

So there you have it, my own personal top ten city break destinations in the world. I’ve visited four so far and six more to go, but I’ll leave it to your imagination as to which!
