Venice Weekend– art and opera
Venice is a much sought after City break and a favourite for Europeans and certainly the British. It comes within the top ten city break destinations as voted for in a recent poll.
Some of the best sites to see are:
Doges Palace
An opulent three storey palace (one of Europe’s finest), it is adorned with white and pink marble finely crafted archways and lavish stately rooms containing priceless works of art. Connecting to the Bridge of Sighs and to the adjoining prison once home to Casanova.
Piazza St Marco
Situated in St Marks Square by the canals and it is a widely recognised image of Venice. It is full of the iconic features of Venice from pavement cafes to the huge clock tower and St Marks Basilica.
A Gondola Ride
This is a must when you visit Venice and is an appealing image of Venice the world over as a traditional Venetian gondola glides effortlessly over the Grand Canal.
The Lido
An extremely glamorous stretch of golden beach coastline which is particularly popular in the summer.
Opera
Another must for those who love theatre and opera and an opera in Venice is very atmospheric. La Fenice concert hall could easily rival the world known La Scala in Milan for elegance. Special celebrity performances will punctuate opera season and classic Verdi and Puccini perform to an appreciative audience.
